I recently replaced my 2-year-old Motorola Q phone with a new one I bought on eBay. Online, I was able to activate it, and all is well. The only thing I needed to do was get my contacts and calendar off of the old phone and over to the new one. Easy enough if you have Outlook, but I refuse to use it.

So the question raised was how to copy over my data easily without using Outlook?

Turned out, pretty easy. Simply follow these steps (note: this was done in Windows XP):

1. Install Microsoft ActiveSync for XP. For Vista, you'll need Windows Mobile Center.
2. Connect the phone via USB to your PC, and ActiveSync should find it.
3. Browse the contents of your OLD phone, and copy the file 'pim.vol' from your phone to your local computer, and then rename it to 'pim2.vol'.
4. Turn the old phone off, turn the new one on, and connect it to the PC via a USB cable.
5. Copy your 'pim2.vol' file from your PC to the root of your phone.
6. Rename 'pim.vol' to 'pim3.vol', and then rename 'pim2.vol' to 'pim.vol'.
7. Reboot!

Voila! If all went well, you should have your calendar, contacts, and more from your old Motorola Q phone on the new one!
